Final Stop Motion

The project I made is a photographically documented stop motion. It uses photoshop techniques to achieve a distorted version of several scenes.

When thinking of the elusive, I was drawn to the idea of psychedelics and how elusive the experience can be. Going off of that, I was thinking about how each person has their own world and it’s hard to communicate it to others. In my stop motion, the guy is just going through his day and we’re seeing through his eyes. I wanted to take the elusiveness of a solitary experience- like a psychedelically enhanced day. However, no drugs are ever shown or even really implied in the work: I wanted to be inspired by those visuals rather than directly going for that.
The psychedelic visuals occur in three separate scenes. The first, and arguably the most impactful, is when the character's eyes begin to grow and the lighting gradually changes as he brushes his teeth. Next, after he's gone outside, he gazes out at a warping tree across the water. Finally, he looks down at his hands to see them pulsing and rapidly changing colors.
I tried to emphasize the fact that it's being seen through his eyes in the shots. In the first, he's watching himself in the mirror when the changes happen. As soon as he moves his head out of the shot and then comes back up, the lighting and eyes are returned to normal because he's no longer facing forward and making contact with the camera.
Outside, his interaction with the tree is framed with the camera initially behind his head. It then moves up and to the right as his head does the same, as though it's following his movement.
Finally, with the hands, the audience doesn't see what he does until the second cut. At first, they only see his reaction as he stares at his hands, and then it cuts to the vision he's having.
Overall, communicating the individual experience of illusory hallucinations was the main concept of my stop motion!
